Uptown is the area directly north of downtown Dallas, encompassing the McKinney Avenue corridor and the historic State-Thomas neighborhood.  The area features wood-frame homes, many of which have been restored to their early 20th century grandeur.  Several high-rise condominiums, such as La Tour and The Worthington,
offer many inner city amenities including workout facilities and restaurants, as do highrise apartments such as The Residences on McKinney.  One of the most architecturally handsome commercial centers in Dallas is the Crescent Hotel and Offices, which contains a beautiful courtyard and spiral walkway to some of the most exclusive retail shops and eateries in the city.

Some of the finest dining and entertainment in Dallas is within walking distance, and there are just as many things to do during the day, such as peruse the numerous antique stores that cluster around Routh Street and eat at the new chef-owned nouvelle cuisine restaurants.  The Quadrangle, an open-air shopping center, has decorative and furnishing stores and fashion retailers as well as trendy nightclubs.

Uptown residents live within walking distance of downtown offices, but they can also ride to work on the McKinney Avenue Trolley, a restored electric streetcar system run by volunteers.
